Primary in NY-22 Gets Brutal

Tenney and Cornwell Argue on Live Radio, Cornwell Calls D.C. Insider Out for Failed Legislative Record and Losing in 2018

Things are heating up in the primary in New York’s 22nd District.

Before the holiday, Steve Cornwell had his radio airtime completely hijacked by retread candidate Claudia Tenney and things got pretty testy.

While Tenney took personal shots at Cornwell, the Broome County DA focused on Tenney’s record. Tenney made plenty of excuses for losing in 2018, but facts matter. The people of Upstate New York rejected Claudia Tenney because she did not deliver for her constituents. Voters have not forgotten her votes to gut pre-existing conditions protections, her vote for the tax scam that capped state and local tax deductions, or her failure to actually deliver for this district’s flatware industry.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS BELOW:

On Taxes:
Tenney, for whatever reason, lauded her co-sponsorship of the 2017 GOP Tax Scam as a legislative accomplishment. Reminder: the GOP Tax Bill disproportionately hurt families in New York by capping the state and local tax deductions and the nonpartisan Tax Foundation found that regardless of the state, city or locale, the fact remains that the wealthy got roughly twice as big a break.

Cornwell: “What are your three biggest accomplishments, Claudia?”
Tenney: “Oh I have a number of accomplishments. Number one: tax reform has been tremendously helpful. I helped to guarantee that we got tax credits…”
Cornwell: “Did you author that?
Tenney: “I was part of it, I was a cosponsor of all these bills, we’re all part of it.”
Cornwell: “So the State and Local Tax then, you left that out? You left SALT deductions out?”
Tenney: “I fought to get…
Cornwell: But you failed.”

More On Her Legislative Record:
When pressed about what her actual accomplishments in Congress were, Tenney failed to articulate what she actually delivered on. REMINDER: Claudia Tenney tried and failed to deliver for the flatware industry (which Rep. Brindisi accomplished in his first 7 months in office).

Cornwell: “How many [bills] did you sponsor?
Tenney: “I cosponsored dozens of bills.”
Cornwell: “Cosponsored. How many were your idea? Or did you just put your name on it? Did you actually create anything?”
Tenney: “Well I got five passed. […]”
Cornwell: “And yet the people still decided not to reelect you.”

On Her Record As A Washington Insider:
Tenney has consistently put special interest donors and her party ahead of Upstate New Yorkers and Cornwell is right to call her out on it. Tenney brags about her Washington connections, but in the end, being a Washington Insider only got her so far. REMINDER: just weeks ago, Claudia Tenney was forced to return campaign donations from recently indicted Igor Fruman and CNN reported that another man, Lev Parnas, was in attendance at a high dollar fundraiser in her honor.

Tenney: “Have you met with the President’s team yet?”
Cornwell: “No, I’m not an insider like you.”
