Put on Notice: Vulnerable Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks Gets First Major Democratic Challenger

In case Mariannette Miller-Meeks wasn’t already nervous about having to defend her disastrous first-term record to Iowa voters, today’s announcement of a Democratic challenger in IA-02 likely has her sweating.

Even though Miller-Meeks has only been in Washington for a few months, she has taken every opportunity to prove she is dangerously out of step with Iowa’s 2nd District. Whether it is choosing her party bosses over Iowa families, or repeatedly spreading COVID disinformation, voters know Miller-Meeks cannot be trusted. Iowans will know that her out-of-touch, flip-flopping, and extreme record includes:

• Repeatedly peddling COVID misinformation, including falsely stating that children do not spread COVID-19 and promoting President Trump’s dangerous guidance to take hydroxychloroquine as a COVID-19 treatment.

• Voting to cover up the truth about the deadly January 6th insurrection, shamelessly flip-flopping to appease her Washington party leaders despite initially backing an independent commission and acknowledging that “it’s important to establish the timeline.”

• Opposing a middle-class tax cut for Iowa families by voting against the Child Tax Credit — critical relief reaching nearly 90% of families nationwide that has already helped working Iowans cover the costs of childcare, prepare for the back-to-school season, and get parents back in the workforce, helping families make ends meet.

• Joining her Washington GOP bosses in voting against the American Rescue Plan, a widely popular investment in Iowa and America’s recovery from the COVID pandemic that has helped to get shots into arms, dollars into pockets, and children safely back into schools.

• Falling in line with her party by trying to block a bill which would make key infrastructure investments — “despite the measure including more than $15 million for trail and road projects in Iowa’s 2nd congressional district” which she herself had requested.

• Getting called out multiple times by her own constituents in hometown papers for “pandering to the narrow, self-serving goals of those other members of your party” and a record that is “unacceptable for a representative of the 2nd District of Iowa.”

“There’s a good reason Miller-Meeks is one of the most endangered members of Congress: at every turn, she has picked her party bosses over Iowa families,” said DCCC spokesperson Elena Kuhn. “Come election time, the voters of Iowa’s 2nd District will know that Miller-Meeks chose to spew reckless disinformation instead of voting for critical COVID relief and a middle-class tax cut that has been a lifeline for Iowans.”
