Race Radar: Dems Primed to Pick Up Seats in Ohio

OH-01, OH-13 present opportunities for Democrats in the Buckeye State

With the general election quickly approaching, Democrats are looking forward to two top pick-up opportunities in Ohio: OH-01, currently represented by vulnerable Republican Steve Chabot, and OH-13, a newly-drawn district encompassing the Akron area.

The seats represent some of Democrats’ top chances at picking up seats in 2022.

In Ohio’s 1st Congressional District, the DCCC has backed Red to Blue candidate Greg Landsman, a Cincinnati city councilman who has served as a public school teacher and has dedicated his career to expanding educational opportunities for students in Ohio and beyond.

In his first quarter, Greg’s momentum helped him bring in more than $532,000 for his campaign without a penny from corporate interestsnearly triple what incumbent Steve Chabot was able to raise in the same period.

Republicans might wonder if Chabot has given up on Congress. He’s certainly given up on Cincinnati.

Despite finding himself clinging to relevance in a significantly redrawn district that keeps Cincinnati whole, Chabot has not moderated himself in the least.

  • He voted against the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law which will fund critical repairs to roads, highways, bridges and more across the Buckeye State – and, perhaps most importantly for Southwest Ohio, the Brent Spence Bridge.
  • He voted against the bipartisan COMPETES Act to boost America’s competitiveness with China.
  • He voted against a bipartisan bill to cap insulin at $35 and bring down health care costs for his constituents.

At every opportunity, Chabot has voted to make life more expensive for his constituents and be an obstacle to Ohio’s economic growth.

The current iteration of OH-01 has changed significantly after redistricting, and keeps Cincinnati whole for the first time in decades. President Biden would have won the current iteration with 54% of the vote, shifting OH-01 from a Trump +3.0 district to a Biden +8.0 district.

In Ohio’s 13th Congressional District, the DCCC has backed Red to Blue candidate and former Ohio State House Minority Leader Emilia Sykes. Sykes rose up to become one of the youngest legislative minority leaders in the country, proving her ability to work across the aisle to deliver wins for Northeast Ohioans that have made life better for families, workers and small businesses.

In her first quarter, Emilia dominated in fundraising for OH-13, outraising her closest Republican opponents by $112,000 and $255,000.

While the Democratic candidate in this toss-up race has a proven record of bipartisan leadership, the Republican field is busy running to the extremes. In stark contrast to Emilia’s record of putting in the work for Northeast Ohioans, Republicans’ preferred candidate has made a name for herself hopping from job to job, providing “commentary” in the way of divisive, misleading and often outright false rhetoric.

Ohio’s 13th District is centered around Akron but differs significantly from previous seats that made up this area of Northeast Ohio. President Biden would have won the current iteration with 51.46% of the two-way vote.

DCCC Spokesperson Abel Iraola
“Democrats are charged up and ready to win these seats in Ohio, thanks to our stellar candidates in Greg Landsman and Emilia Sykes.”
