REALITY CHECK: New York GOP’s Midterm Meltdown – No Money, No Bench, and Trump [Politico]

“It’s not easy being a Republican in New York. It’ll be even harder this midterm election year.”

A brutal new POLITICO report lays bare what New York Republicans don’t want to admit: they’re staring down a midterm disaster – “outraised and outpolled in key races” that could decide control of the House.

The political ground across New York is shifting decisively toward Democrats as Donald Trump’s “abysmal favorability” drags down Republican candidates across the state and leaves the GOP scrambling to field viable challengers.

The warning signs for New York Republicans couldn’t be clearer:

  • In NY-17, Mike Lawler has dealt with raucous town halls at home and his race was just shifted in Democrats’ favor to “toss-up.
  • In NY-03, Tom Suozzi’s main rival – who he beat in 2024 – launched only just last week, hasn’t yet reported fundraising and lagged badly in funds last cycle.
  • In NY-04Laura Gillen’s potential challenger has dealt with several scandals and ethics concerns that are sure to follow him in another campaign for “one of the most watched [races] in the nation.
  • In NY-19Josh Riley has 12 times more cash on hand than his challenger. Who had to loan himself $130,000 to keep his campaign afloat.
  • In NY-22John Mannion’s GOP challenger abandoned his campaign last month.

According to POLITICO, Republicans across the Empire State are scrambling as Democrats had their “best-ever performances in numerous deep red towns and rural areas” last November and the GOP “lost a bellwether special election for state Senate in western New York last week.

DCCC Spokesperson Riya Vashi:
“New York Republicans are stuck with a toxic brand, a shrinking bench, and Donald Trump’s extreme agenda sinking candidates across the state. While the GOP scrambles to find candidates and cash, Democrats are focused on lowering costs and protecting health care. The path to the House majority runs straight through New York – and voters are ready to send Mike Lawler and House Republicans packing.”
