Texas economy begins to rebound after House Democrats passed relief legislation without a single Republican vote
Texas’s economy is rebounding after the American Rescue Plan provided a lifeline to Texas families, workers, and small businesses – but you wouldn’t know it from listening to Rep. Beth Van Duyne (TX-24), whose newest strategy is to accuse the legislation of providing too much help in the wake of a devastating global pandemic.
Over the weekend, Van Duyne criticized the $1,400 direct payments to Texans, claiming they incentivized people not to work. The numbers tell a different story: Over the last month, “Employers across Texas, including that hardest hit by the pandemic, are hiring and rehiring workers as more people get vaccinated and venture out to spend stimulus checks” and the state added 110,800 jobs in March.

“Beth Van Duyne’s NO vote against the relief bill protecting and creating jobs in her district is looking worse and worse by the day,” said DCCC spokesperson Monica Robinson. “After Texas added more than 100,000 jobs in March alone, Van Duyne’s laughable new strategy is to say the American Rescue Plan provided too much help. The truth is that the House Democrats’ relief plan provided a lifeline to Texas families and small businesses – and Beth Van Duyne can’t take a shred of credit.”
