REPORT: Rob Wittman Referred Constituents Who Needed Help to Consumer Protection Agency He Voted to Gut

New ProPublica investigation reveals Rob Wittman referred more than 100 of his Virginia constituents to the CFPB, only to then vote to gut the agency

A new investigative report from ProPublica reveals that after Congressman Rob Wittman directed his constituents in need of financial relief to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) – which operates as the top cop on the beat protecting Virginians from scammers and unfair business practices – he proceeded to vote to gut the watchdog agency.

According to ProPublica, Wittman “referred more than 100 constituents to the CFPB for help, among the most of any House members.”

When asked for comment, Wittman “didn’t respond to questions from ProPublica about the disconnect between [his] offices’ use of the CFPB’s services and [his] votes to cut it.”

Wittman’s vote to gut funding for the CFPB is particularly dangerous for servicemembers and seniors, who are statistically more susceptible to scams. The CFPB helps protect veterans from claim sharks and protects seniors from scammers looking to take advantage of their social security and retirement benefits.

DCCC Spokesperson Eli Cousin:
“Career politician Rob Wittman voted to gut the agency that was literally created to protect Americans and their wallets from scams and deceptive business practices. He then directed his constituents in need of help to the very same agency that he himself voted to gut. It’s just the latest example of Rob Wittman selling out his own constituents and voting to make life harder for Virginians.”
