On the 90th anniversary of Social Security, vulnerable House Republicans remain silent on recent comments made by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that their vote for the Big, Ugly Law is a backdoor for privatization of this vital program.
Their refusal to speak out comes as Social Security “looks more threatened” now than any other time in its 90 year history.
As the Associated Press reports, “Social Security faces a looming shortfall in money to pay full benefits. Since President Donald Trump took office in January, the program has faced more tumult.”
Yet, as this full-out assault occurs, House Republicans have been completely mum.
“American Journal News reached out to 31 of the 35 House Republicans who are considered the most vulnerable incumbents in 2026 to see if they agreed with Bessent. None had responded at the time of publication.”
DCCC Spokesperson Justin Chermol:
“On today of all days, House Republicans should be fighting to protect the hard-earned benefits millions of Americans are entitled to, not voting for the creation of a ‘backdoor’ to privatize Social Security and falling in line as Donald Trump and his reckless administration take a chainsaw to the life-saving program. Voters who were promised by their Republican candidates that they would cherish the program are rightfully angry, and will hold these cowardly Republicans accountable next year.” |
