Republican Abortion Ban Goes Into Effect in North Carolina

GOP candidates for Congress stay mum as their toxic agenda to ban abortion becomes law across the state

After a Republican 20-week abortion ban took effect in North Carolina, GOP congressional candidates have stayed silent, refusing to take responsibility for their toxic agenda because they know they’re out of step with North Carolinians.

North Carolina Republicans aren’t taking their victory lap because they know their agenda to ban abortion is wildly unpopular and will doom them in November. But voters won’t forget their records:

  • For Sandy Smith (NC-01), North Carolina’s abortion ban doesn’t go far enough. Smith wants to see abortion completely banned, with no exceptions – not even to save the life of the mother.

  • Christian Castelli (NC-06) asserted that he would “protect the unborn from conception to birth” – then deleted that page from his website so no one would know his extreme positions.

  • For Bo Hines (NC-13), North Carolina’s abortion ban doesn’t go far enough. Hines wants to see abortion completely banned, with no exceptions – not even to save the life of the mother.

  • Pat Harrigan (NC-14) supported Roe v. Wade being overturned and “push[ing] the matter back to the states.” He got his wish, and now his state is banning abortion for North Carolina women.

“Republicans have worked for decades to ban abortion, and now, women across North Carolina are waking up today in a state where they don’t have access to the reproductive health care they need,” said DCCC spokesperson Monica Robinson. “This Republican ban is a devastating attack on women’s rights and targets patients who are in some of the most difficult circumstances. The stakes couldn’t be higher in November and voters will reject the GOP at the ballot box.”
