Republican Abortion Bans Could Jail Women for Miscarriages

National Journal: Republicans’ abortion bans could mean more people are jailed for miscarriages

Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe, women are increasingly likely to be jailed and charged with murder as a result of Republicans wanting to control their health care and personal decisions.

In new reporting from National Journal, a woman’s reproductive rights expert warned that “anyone who experiences a miscarriage in a county in which a prosecutor is interested” in prosecuting “will likely” be investigated. The expert goes on to emphasize instances where women “are charged with manslaughter, they are charged with murder, they are charged with feticide, child abuse, child neglect” if their pregnancy is not carried to term.

“This is the result of the Republican Party’s crusade to criminalize reproductive health care: Women could be jailed for an unpreventable, sometimes devastating, unexpected loss of a pregnancy,” said DCCC spokesperson Helen Kalla. “The stakes are clear this November. Democrats will protect women’s reproductive freedom, while Republicans are pushing extreme abortion bans that result in women being prosecuted for suffering a miscarriage.”
