Republican Majority Leader: I’m A “No” on Extending Affordable Care Act Tax Credits

Scalise represents over 48K enrollees on the ACA Marketplace

Steve Scalise, the Republican Majority Leader, is leading the charge to rip health care coverage away from millions of Americans, including thousands of his own constituents, and raising costs on hardworking families.

In an interview with Punchbowl News, Scalise said he would vote “No” on extending the Affordable Care Act tax credits that provide affordable coverage to over 48,000 constituents in Louisiana’s 1st Congressional district.

Punchbowl News writes:

Scalise, the No. 2 House Republican, said he wouldn’t vote to extend these credits. And according to Scalise, the credits are used to “bail out insurance companies” and extending them will do nothing to stop skyrocketing costs.

According to a cost calculator from the non-partisan Kaiser Family Foundation, two 60-year-olds in Louisiana with a household income of $85,000, for example, would see insurance costs rise from around $600 to $2,000 per month if the tax credits are not extended.

A family of four with two adults in their 50s earning $90,000 would see costs increase from about $390 to $700 a month.

Like Scalise, fellow Louisianan Mike Johnson, who called ACA tax credits a “boondoggle,” has made clear he would turn his back on over 40,000 of his own constituents who would see premiums, co-pays and deductibles skyrocket.

DCCC Spokesperson Justin Chermol:
“Mike Johnson and Steve Scalise have made it crystal clear: House Republicans want to raise health care costs on everyday Americans. If the Affordable Care Act tax credits expire, more than 20 million Americans will face skyrocketing premiums, co-pays, and deductibles and know exactly who to blame.”
