Republican Sandy Smith Changes Her Tune on Law and Order

National Journal: “Republican incumbents appeared to become the party of ‘defund the police’ in a matter of hours.”

Republican Sandy Smith’s shameless hypocrisy was on full display last night.

After the news that the FBI searched Donald Trump’s Florida home Mar-a-Lago, suddenly Smith changed her tune on backing law enforcement, saying: “They are hellbent on taking down President Trump. They have now officially weaponized the FBI. This is third world country crap.”

The manufactured outrage is a complete flip flop from Sandy Smith’s previous assertion that she supports “Law and Order,” and the irony won’t be lost on North Carolinians. As National Journal put it: “Republican incumbents appeared to become the party of ‘defund the police’ in a matter of hours.”

Smith herself has a complicated relationship with the law. In a protective order Smith’s daughter requested following a pattern of alleged domestic violence, her daughter says she called “sheriff’s deputies nine times” because of assaults that happened “on multiple occasions.”

Instead of letting law enforcement do its job, Republicans immediately leapt to spread baseless conspiracy theories and attack the integrity of the FBI. Last night made clear: Trump’s Republican Party has no conviction that won’t collapse like a house of cards the second it serves them politically.

“Sandy Smith is so extreme that she attacked law enforcement the second it served her politically,” said DCCC spokesperson Monica Robinson. “If Sandy Smith really respected the law, she would let law enforcement do their work instead of spreading baseless conspiracy theories and attacking the integrity of the FBI.”
