Republican Senators Who Skip Work Shouldn’t Follow No-Show Lee Zeldin’s Example

Dear Republican Senators currently under scrutiny for ditching committee hearings:

Zeldin NY Post 2As you face embarrassing press for skipping out of your duties as elected officials, we advise you to avoid responding to reporters like your House colleague, no-show Long Island Congressman Lee Zeldin.

Earlier this year, the New York Post reported that Zeldin “missed more than half of full [Foreign Affairs] committee hearings last year,” and skipped out of two-thirds of “full committee and subcommittee hearings focused just on ISIS and the Syrian crisis – issues Zeldin regularly lectures about on cable news.”

In response, a Zeldin spokesperson argued that, “The congressman is never truly absent from any committee or subcommittee hearing.”

And in a follow-up story, Zeldin’s spokesperson referred to the Congressman’s record as “exceptional.”

“No-show Congressman Lee Zeldin is a textbook example of how an elected official should not react after getting caught blowing off work, especially in a case like Zeldin’s in which he skipped out of two-thirds of committee hearings that focused on taking down ISIS and addressing the Syrian conflict,” said Bryan Lesswing at the DCCC. “When Lee Zeldin was caught red-handed ditching important work on national security in Congress, he shifted blame elsewhere and made excuses. That’s an alarming lack of leadership, and his absenteeism should raise serious questions about his priorities.”
