Republicans and Democrats Agree: Tom Barrett Is Out-Of-Step With Michigan Voters on Abortion

New polling from the Detroit News and WDIV this week confirms what Michiganders already know – Tom Barrett’s extreme position on abortion is out of touch with Michigan voters, regardless of political party.

A poll of likely GOP primary voters showed that the vast majority of Republican voters support abortion access in cases of rape, incest, and danger to the life of the mother. This comes just days after another poll which showed that most Michiganders – including a large majority of independents – opposed the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

Yet Tom Barrett has spent months promoting his extreme support for banning abortion with no exceptions. After raising campaign cash by touting his “100% PRO-LIFE, NO EXCEPTIONS” position, Barrett doubled down, stating, “I know I’m right” on abortion and “I take it very seriously.”

Barrett’s radical position should come as no surprise given his extreme legislative record. Barrett introduced a bill that would make some abortions a felony with no exceptions for rape or incest and throw doctors in jail for two years. He also joined the Michigan legislature in calling to reinstate the draconian 1931 law that would felonize nearly every abortion in the state.

“Tom Barrett is a far-right radical who would roll Michiganders’ rights back nearly a century, put the government between a patient and their doctor, and outlaw all abortions,” said DCCC spokesperson Elena Kuhn. “This fall, Michigan voters will reject Barrett’s toxic, out-of-touch brand of politics.”
