Tom Barrett has faced months of repeated criticism and public pressure for voting against bipartisan measures to support 5,000 Michigan auto manufacturing jobs and bring a new auto plant to Michigan’s 7th Congressional District. And now, Barrett is under scrutiny for betting against Michigan workers even from his GOP primary opponent.
Republican write-in challenger Jake Hagg called out Barrett last week for his vote against Michigan workers and even voiced his agreement with Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin on the issue.
By repeatedly voting against new manufacturing projects, Barrett is standing against a bipartisan coalition of Republican and Democratic state lawmakers, as well as the millions of Michiganders who want these auto jobs in Michigan – not taken to other states or shipped overseas.
Maybe that’s why Washington Republicans are so nervous about his primary. Last week, House Republicans’ Super PAC, Congressional Leadership Fund, announced they were dumping another $100,000 to drag Barrett across the finish line in his race against Hagg.
“Republicans and Democrats found something they can agree on – Tom Barrett has repeatedly sold out Michigan,” said DCCC spokesperson Elena Kuhn. “Tom Barrett’s extreme vote against Michigan workers and auto manufacturing jobs will continue to come back to haunt him and prove him unelectable.”
