Republicans Are Getting “Crushed” in Recent Elections, And They Are Freaking Out About the Midterms

Axios AM’s 1 big thing: GOP wipeout

Republicans are getting crushed in special election after special election, prompting fears about a forthcoming wipeout in November among party insiders.

Since Trump was elected, Democrats have overperformed Kamala Harris’s 2024 margin by 13%, according to data compiled by The Downballot.

After sweeping the 2025 off-year elections in Virginia, New Jersey, and New York, Democrats have maintained their momentum into 2026. Democrats recently flipped a Trump +17 state Senate district in Texas and flipped a Trump +13 state House seat in Louisiana by a landslide. In total, Democrats have flipped 26 state legislative seats since Donald Trump took office.

Today, the DCCC released a memo highlighting how Democrats will use the GOP’s 2024 broken promise to lower costs to defeat them in 2026.

DCCC Spokesperson Justin Chermol:
“Polling, special elections, and grassroots momentum proves Democrats are in a commanding lead to take back the House in November. Even Republicans know they are going down.”
