Republicans Found Their Winning Message for 2022: Keep Medication Costs Sky-High

Big Pharma-funded GOP outside group bankrolls $4 million ad buy opposing bill to lower prescription drug costs

After months of handwringing and in-fighting, the Republican Party appears to have finally settled on their winning message for the 2022 midterms: Keep prescription drug costs sky-high.

A Big Pharma-funded, Republican, dark-money group announced they would be bankrolling a $4 million ad buy targeting Democratic members of Congress because they – wait for it – voted for legislation to lower the cost of prescription medication for everyday Americans.

What could go wrong for the Grand Old Party when they target popular legislation that 85% of Americans say should be at the top of Congress’s to-do list?

DCCC Spokesperson Chris Taylor:

“Democrats in the House are fighting every day to lower the cost of health care and make medication more affordable. If Republicans want to light four million dollars on fire to deliver that message to TVs across the country, we warmly invite them to do so.”

Read more on the ad buy in Fox News:

  • “A conservative advocacy group that backs Republican causes is going up in over 40 congressional districts controlled by House Democrats with a major ad blitz targeting a bill that aims to regulate and lower prescription drug prices[.]”
  • “House Democrats in December 2019 passed H.R. 3, which was known as the ‘Lower Drug Costs Now Act.’”
  • “Aiming to lower skyrocketing prescription drug prices, the bill would give Medicare the power to negotiate directly with the drug companies. It would also make the lower drug prices negotiated by Medicare available to Americans with private insurance, not just Medicare beneficiaries.”
  • “Democrats said their measure, which was opposed by Republicans and the pharmaceutical industry, would also ‘stop drug companies ripping off Americans while charging other countries less for the same drugs.’”
  • “The bill died in the Senate, which was controlled by the GOP at the time.”
