Detmer Announced Support For The Proud Boys Following Participation In Anti-Stay-At-Home Protests
Republican congressional candidate Mike Detmer is mired in controversy after attending an anti-stay-at-home protest in Lansing where he “[took] a selfie with about a dozen people, none of whom are following social distancing guidelines. Also seen in the picture is an individual wearing a Proud Boys face mask and flashing a recognized white power symbol.”
Rather than denounce the group, which the Southern Poverty Law Center has designated as a “hate group” for spreading misogynistic, white nationalist, and extreme rhetoric, Detmer bragged – in a now-deleted post from his official campaign Facebook account – that he “had a great discussion with a couple top members” and declared “THEY ARE NOT WHITE SUPREMACISTS OR RACIST!”
“Every Republican running in the 8th Congressional District – Paul Junge, Kristina Lyke, Nikki Snyder, and Alan Hoover – need to explicitly and firmly denounce Mike Detmer’s support for The Proud Boys, a hateful and extremist group,” said DCCC Spokesperson Courtney Rice. “Their style of dangerous rhetoric and violence has no place in our politics.”
