Republicans Side with Russia

As Russia continues its aggression in Ukraine, they are seemingly finding support among the Republican party. Here are some examples of Republicans siding with Putin:

• Less than a month ago, nearly every House Republican voted to shut down the government and opposed $12.3 billion in funding to help Ukraine fight back against Russian Aggression.

• In May of 2022, 57 House Republicans sided with Russia and voted against Ukraine aid.

• Republicans stood by as Donald Trump sided with Russia over the FBI in 2018.

• Last month, Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) “posted, then deleted, a tweet that echoed Kremlin language and called for a halt to ‘gift-giving to Ukraine.’”

• Sitting GOP members of Congress have villainized Ukrainians fighting for their freedom:

  • Rep. Paul Gosar: “Ukraine is not our ally. Russia is not our enemy.”

  • GOP policy maker Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene suggested there were “Nazi’s in the Ukrainian army.”

  • Rep. Madison Cawthorn called Ukrainian President Zelenskyy a “thug.”

• GOP candidates in swing districts have railed against helping Ukraine stop Russian aggression:

  • NH-01 nominee Karoline Leavitt said she would have voted against a $40 billion aid package for Ukraine and called the continued support of Ukraine “unconscionable.”

  • MI-03 nominee John Gibbs said he opposed aid packages and called Ukraine “one of the most corrupt countries in the world.”

  • CO-07 nominee Erik Aadland suggested ongoing support to Ukraine was “encourag[ing] escalation.”

As a result of Republicans’ votes and rhetoric, Ukraine and global powers worry a Republican controlled congress could hinder efforts to stop Russian aggression.
