RHETORIC VS. REALITY: Fred Upton on Health Care

Upton decries potential loss of protections for pre-existing conditions even though he was instrumental in pushing the Washington Republicans’ assault on those same protections

Right now, House Republicans are scrambling to spin their latest attempt to roll back protections for pre-existing conditions and raise health care costs on middle-class families, as they realize they’re heading towards political disaster.

Few, however, match the spin from Fred Upton. After Upton joined fellow Republicans in January in backing the lawsuit currently threatening the Affordable Care Act, he is now frantically trying to cover his tracks, telling the Detroit News, “A couple years ago, we all figured he could not end the ACA abruptly because you need meaningful coverage for those with pre-existing illnesses.”

This is the same Fred Upton who was “crucial” in helping to push the Republicans’ disastrous attempts to roll back the ACA in 2017, after inserting an amendment to the bill that provided “woefully inadequate” support for the millions of Americans with pre-existing conditions who were at risk of losing their coverage if it passed – including 292,600 in Upton’s district.

“After more than three decades in Washington, Michiganders shouldn’t expect anything more than the political double-talk they’re getting from Fred Upton,” said DCCC spokesperson Mike Gwin. “With his political career on the line, Upton is trying to cover up his long history of backing attacks on our health care at the behest of his big special interest donors.”
