Rob Mercuri’s Statewide Abortion Ban Echoes Arizona’s Draconian Law

Yesterday’s Arizona Supreme Court decision to reinstate its Civil War-era abortion ban in the state has left anti-abortion extremists across the country scrambling to distance themselves from the ruling. Unfortunately for Rob Mercuri, his record of backing a similar abortion ban in the Pennsylvania state legislature is clear.

Mercuri has been working tirelessly on his own initiative to strip away women’s reproductive freedoms.

As a state representative, Mercuri has…

• Co-sponsored the near total six-week abortion ban, without exceptions for rape or incest. The bill would punish doctors with up to seven years in prison.

• Voted for a constitutional amendment that would ban the right to an abortion, something the ACLU said would “threaten the fundamental rights of every Pennsylvanian.”

Shortly after launching his campaign, Mercuri attempted to scrub his anti-abortion record from his website. However, only a few months later he was spotted at an anti-abortion rally organized by a group whose goal is to “ultimately make abortion unthinkable.”

“Republicans are trying to desperately run away from the draconian Arizona ruling, but there’s no hiding the fact that Rob Mercuri has advocated for a similar ban. Mercuri is blatantly playing politics with women’s reproductive freedoms — and his hypocrisy will fall flat with Pennsylvania voters.”
