Rodney Davis’ Broken Promise on Pre-Existing Conditions

“I’ve introduced this bill to share the stories of people in my district who fear losing their insurance because of a pre-existing condition.”

-Rodney Davis, IL-13

That was then. Now, Rodney Davis is all in on the Republicans’ Repeal and Ripoff health care bill that would gut protections for people with pre-existing conditions. In addition to putting protections for pre-existing conditions at risk and allowing insurance companies to charge women more for the same health care, the Republican bill would result in 24 million Americans losing their health insurance, impose an unfair age tax on older Americans, and raise premiums.

Rodney Davis has done a 180 when it comes to his support of protecting Americans with pre-existing conditions,” said DCCC spokeswoman Rachel Irwin. “As vulnerable Republicans distance themselves from this bill, Davis is going all in on an attempt to tear away health care from thousands of his constituents. Illinois voters won’t fall for this type of double talk that jeopardizes their access to affordable health care and opens the door to discrimination for pre-existing conditions.”

In Illinois’ 13th Congressional District, 290,800 residents have a pre-existing condition. That’s 50% of residents under 65. According to experts a 40-year-old individual with Asthma could be hit with a $4,340 premium surcharge per year. Diabetes without complication could cost a 40-year-old $5,600. A 40-year-old woman who has completed a pregnancy with minor complications – or even none at all – could see an astounding $17,320 premium surcharge.
