Following the devastating news that Sandy Roberson’s financial mismanagement has plunged Rocky Mount into tens of millions of dollars of debt, Roberson was not in his community taking accountability or reassuring residents…but he was on Twitter.
In order to close the city’s funding gap, Roberson is raising costs for utilities like natural gas and electricity and doing a mass layoff of Rocky Mount employees. Now, Rocky Mount residents are paying the price for his mismanagement and they want answers.
Last week, residents gathered to meet with city leaders to air their concerns and find out exactly what happened “from the horse’s mouth.”…Roberson was silent. And he’s refusing to answer questions publicly.
The only place where Roberson could be found over the past week – Twitter. While other local Rocky Mount representatives met with their constituents, Roberson hid behind a screen tweeting nearly 40 times in the past week since his crisis was revealed to the public. He mentioned Rocky Mount just one time attempting to dodge responsibility – but reports make clear he was “made aware of the situation.”
DCCC Spokesperson Madison Andrus:
“The complete lack of accountability and transparency that Roberson has shown as his town faces financial peril is nothing short of disqualifying. Instead of meeting with his constituents and cleaning up his own mess he’s hiding, casting blame away from himself, and lying to his residents. Rocky Mount deserves better than an absentee Mayor, and failing grades don’t get promotions.” |
