| Today, the DCCC announced that Sarah Trone Garriott has been added to the first round of the committee’s highly competitive ‘Red to Blue’ program, signaling that the DCCC is invested in providing Trone Garriott, a top-tier candidate, with the support needed to continue building a winning campaign as she runs for IA-03.
“Sarah Trone Garriott has spent her life showing up for her community, and now she’s running for Congress to continue that service: standing up to protect health care, get costs down, and always do what’s right for Iowa. A mom and a minister, Sarah is in this fight for Iowa families like her own, and she will win this race and work to make life more affordable for the hardworking families Zach Nunn has forgotten,” said DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene.
Sarah Trone Garriott is a mom and a Lutheran minister who has spent her life serving her community — as a hospital chaplain, a pastor, a leader at the Des Moines Area Religious Council Food Pantry Network, and now a State Senator. Sarah successfully flipped a Republican-held seat in the Iowa State Senate in 2020; then she took on the Republican State Senate president in 2022 and won before going on to defend her Trump-won seat again in 2024. Sarah has always stood up for hardworking Iowans and will fight to lower costs, protect health care, and make life more affordable for families like hers. While Zach Nunn works for his party bosses and special interests, Sarah works for Iowa.
Cook Political recently shifted IA-03 in Democrats’ direction to “Toss-Up,” in just the latest sign that Republican Zach Nunn is more vulnerable than ever. In 2025, Iowa Democrats overperformed in special elections by an average of over 22 points, including flipping two Trump +12 and Trump +21 districts.
