Schweikert, Crane, Ciscomani Vote to Decimate Nation’s Emergency Alert Systems

Ignoring the needs of communities across the country that depend on public radio and TV for lifesaving emergency alerts, House Republicans fall in line behind GOP scheme gutting country’s natural disaster alert systems

David Schweikert, Eli Crane, and Juan Ciscomani continue to attack critical, lifesaving services for everyday Arizonans in order to pay for tax breaks for the wealthy and well-connected. After voting for the Big, Ugly Law that would rip health care away from 17 million Americans, including more than
342,000 Arizonans, Schweikert, Crane, and Ciscomani just voted to take away over $1 billion in funds for the Corporation of Public Broadcasting.

For many parts of the country, especially rural communities, public broadcasting serves as the main source for emergency weather alerts to warn people about floods, fires and other natural disasters. It’s a critical system that millions of people depend on. Schweikert, Crane, and Ciscomani’s vote to gut the funding will jeopardize stations’ ability to maintain these emergency alert systems and endanger public safety.

DCCC Spokesperson Lindsay Reilly
“David Schweikert, Eli Crane, and Juan Ciscomani continue to endanger the lives of the American people to pay for their tax breaks that benefit their billionaire backers. Gutting rural hospitals wasn’t enough for them, now they are crippling emergency alert services. Because of Schweikert, Crane, and Ciscomani’s cruelty, Arizonans’ lives will be endangered.”
