Schweikert to Seniors: Put Off Retirement, America Needs You to Work

Schweikert debuts his solution to Social Security shortfall: don’t retire

Rep. David Schweikert has absolutely no intention of protecting Social Security for Arizona seniors – and he took it a step further this week when he suggested that people should delay their hard-earned retirement.

When asked on a local radio station about Social Security and how seniors can plan for retirement, Schweikert replied that maybe Americans just shouldn’t retire:

“What could we do with Social Security and Medicare to incentivize staying in the workplace? Instead of taking your retirement at 62, how do I get you to say ‘do it at 67’ or ‘stay, keep working.’ We desperately need workers in the United States.”

With Social Security potentially facing shortfalls that could end benefits in a few decades, and Republican politicians attempting to gut the system and risk American seniors’ guaranteed benefits on the stock market, Arizonans can’t afford to have Schweikert in charge of their hard-earned retirement.

“Schweikert asking American seniors to delay their retirement, rather than him doing his job in Congress to protect the benefits people have paid into their entire lives, is downright insulting,” said DCCC spokesperson Monica Robinson.
