Scott Garrett’s Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Week

Garrett loses more corporate donors, throws tens of thousands of own North Jersey constituents under the bus

North Jersey congressman Scott Garrett had a rough week of tough headlines and embarrassing coverage. Here’s a quick recap:

On Wednesday, Garrett claimed “only one or two people” were uninsured before the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Newsflash: In Garrett’s district alone, 7.6% of his constituents (or 51,000 people), were uninsured before the ACA – according to a 2009 CRS report.

Yesterday, Bloomberg Businessweek reported that corporate donors U.S. Bancorp and Nomura Holdings “would cease donations” to Garrett moving forward. That now makes five major corporate donors who have decided to drop their support for Garrett due to his pro-discrimination record and anti-LGBT views that made embarrassing national headlines last summer.

“Scott Garrett’s bad headlines this week are no accident; his ultra-conservative views and anti-LGBT record are embarrassing his corporate donors and his own constituents in North Jersey,” said Bryan Lesswing at the DCCC. “As Scott Garrett continues to embarrass his supporters and throw his own constituents under the bus, he only makes himself more vulnerable this November.”
