Vulnerable republican Scott Perry remains under fire for his central role in the planning and execution of the attempt to overturn the election following the release of court documents revealing his text messages with former Trump staffers ahead of the attack.
“[T]he congressman was at the center of Trump’s attempts to overturn the election loss, voted against certifying votes in his home state and […] acted as a go-between for operatives close to Trump and Republicans in Congress,” writes The Messenger.
As the House Freedom Caucus Chair continues downplaying his role in the effort that led to the deadly Capitol attack, Pennsylvanians in the 10th district remain in critical need of a representative who will advocate for their needs in Congress.
Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Scott Perry’s central role in attempting to overturn the 2020 election for former President Donald Trump has made him a prime target for Democrats in 2024, with several progressive candidates vying to oust the arch-conservative.
That political reality is once again clashing with Perry’s actions in the wake of the 2020 presidential election, where the congressman was at the center of Trump’s attempts to overturn the election loss, voted against certifying votes in his home state and, according to texts recently released in an ongoing court case, acted as a go-between for operatives close to Trump and Republicans in Congress.
Those connections have motivated many of Perry’s possible Democratic opponents this year: Not only have multiple Democrats running to take him on cited the central role he played in Trump’s attempt to throw out the 2020 election results, but some have even moved to the district specifically to challenge him because of that work.
Perry, the chair of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, has been at the center of stories about the Jan. 6 insurrection and the legal proceedings around it for years. Last week, a court document – which Politico reported was erroneously released – made public Perry’s text messages about the work to overturn the election results. It included his messages to top officials in the Trump administration, top Republican campaign figures like Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel to Trump campaign operatives.
The story was an example of how news about Perry’s role in work around the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol could be a continuing problem for the congressman. Even though the Republican was able to win reelection in 2022, after much of his work for Trump had been revealed, Democrats in Washington are confident they can unseat the longtime member of the House.
“There is now no denying that Scott Perry played a direct role in the effort to overturn the 2020 election, which led to the deadly insurrection at the Capitol,” said Aidan Johnson, a spokesperson for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “Voters in central Pennsylvania deserve real representation, not someone who’s busy playing phone tag with a bunch of indicted criminals.”
Perry’s district is anchored by two cities: Harrisburg, the commonwealth’s capitol, and York. While the congressman is often seen as one of the House’s most conservative members, the district is notably less Republican: According to Cook Political Report, the area is an R+5 district, meaning it only narrowly leans to the right.
But there is a sense among Democrats that Perry is vulnerable, part of the reason so many of the party’s members are vying for the chance to take him on.
One of the reasons for Democratic confidence is how the district has trended beyond Perry’s reelection campaigns, most notably how Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro won it handily when he defeated Republican Doug Mastriano in 2022.
