Yesterday, Sean McCann joined Pete Buttigieg in Kalamazoo to rally voters behind his vision for change in Congress: lower costs, tackling corruption, and actually showing up for Southwest Michigan.
REMINDER: Cook Political Report just shifted MI-04 to Toss-Up. Sean raised a whopping $1.8 million in Q3, and “outside groups have spent over $13 million on the contest so far” – not including “new support from C.L.F.” dumping in cash to try to save Huizenga – making Michigan’s 4th district one of the most expensive races in the country.

WWMT: “We’ve all heard about how big affordability is during this campaign, and it was a point that Sean McCann returned to over and over again at his rally today.. He…drove home the message that they’re ready to change the current Washington establishment.”
WZZM: “Sean McCann…holding a rally yesterday with former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. McCann…says if elected, he’ll focus on affordability.”
Michigan Advance: Buttigieg and McCann argue Republican self-interest is undermining the American Dream
- During the rally in downtown Kalamazoo, Buttigieg and McCann focused on the economic squeeze voters are feeling due to rising prices for gas, housing, healthcare and childcare.
- “My kids are teenagers, and Secretary Buttigieg’s are younger than that, but we’ve got to make sure that they have that hope and that dream of that American Dream, that home ownership, that retirement, that ability to have a quality of life that’s maybe better than ours,” McCann said, arguing that Congress and President Donald Trump’s self interests are standing in the way of that dream.
- Both McCann and Buttigieg pointed to Trump and congressional Republicans’ promise of lowering costs, with Buttigieg arguing that their efforts are actively costing Americans money.

- “We’ve got Democrats, we’ve got independents, we’ve got an awful lot of what I like to call ‘future former Republicans,’ all saying that we can do better than Bill Huizenga in the United States Congress right now,” Buttigieg said.
- McCann focused on ways he says he’ll fight corruption in government, and told reporters after the event that he’s skeptical of new Huizenga campaign ads promising to end insider trading.
- “I haven’t had 16 years in Congress to try to stop stock trading — the practice of Congress doing that. He’s had that opportunity. So it’s kind of interesting and suspect timing that we’re on the cusp of an election and now all of a sudden the conversation is about, ‘I’m against stock trading for members,'” McCann said.
- “The district changed in 2022 and I became a part of the new Fourth Congressional District. It’s people who are struggling no matter where you go or what you see. People are facing these higher costs. They’re facing their healthcare being taken away from them. They’re seeing none of the promises made by Trump or Huizenga in Congress is to make their lives easier,” McCann said.

- “I run into folks all over the district, people who are of all political stripes who say, ‘this is a Republican Party that I don’t recognize anymore, that doesn’t align with my values’,” McCann said at the rally. “They’re frustrated with Trump’s administration and the fact that Bill Huizenga has been rubber stamping that agenda all along. They’re hungry for change and I think that they see in my profile how I’ve operated as a state legislator and a community servant here locally, that I can bring that different flavor of representation to them.”
- “We just saw those new inflation numbers come out today higher than expected and higher than day one of the Trump administration. People are done with that,” Buttigieg said. “They’re ready for something different and that is why I think you see a lot of people who usually vote Republican, this time they’re going to be voting for change.”
MIRS: Buttigieg Rallies For McCann In West Michigan
- Pete BUTTIGIEG and state Sen. Sean MCCANN (D-Kalamazoo) today appealed to voters who backed former Republican U.S. Rep. Fred UPTON, arguing that U.S. Rep. Bill HUIZENGA (R-Zeeland) lacks his predecessor’s independence and responsiveness to constituents.
- “Huizenga is no Fred Upton,” Buttigieg told reporters after a campaign event drawing about 300 people downtown. “Fred Upton was known for standing up to his party when it was the right thing to do.”
- The Cook Political Report recently moved the race into the “toss up” category while 202 political junkies who responded to MIRS‘ prognosticator survey contest this week split 101-101 on who they thought would win the race.
- McCann said people in the district were struggling with higher living and health care costs.
- “No matter where we go, whether it’s Battle Creek or Holland or St. Joe, this is people looking for a new direction, some change to bring some real relief to their lives because it hasn’t come so far,” he said.
- He said the inflation numbers that just came out put the annual inflation rate at 3.7%, which was up from 3.4% last month.
MLive: Pete Buttigieg rallies in Kalamazoo to flip red district blue
- Hundreds gathered in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church in downtown Kalamazoo to rally for state Sen. Sean McCann’s campaign for the 4th Congressional District.
- Buttigieg and McCann hammered on what they called the broken promises of the Trump Administration, Congressional Republicans and U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, the incumbent McCann is running against.
- “People are facing these higher costs. They’re facing their healthcare being taken away from them. They’re seeing none of the promises made by Trump or Huizenga and Congress to make their lives easier,” McCann told reporters after the event. “No matter where we go … (these are) people who are looking for a new direction and change to bring real relief to their lives, because it hasn’t come so far.”
