Why Was Senator Bishop The Only Senator to Vote for Drug Manufacturers Bottom Line, Against North Carolinians’ Health Care?

The people of North Carolina’s Ninth District deserve a representative that will always put them first. With a decade-and-a-half career in politics, Senator Dan Bishop has made it clear that he will not be that representative, especially when it comes to their health care.

Here’s a perfect example that Senator Bishop owes North Carolinians an explanation of:

In 2017, Bishop was the only member of the entire North Carolina General Assembly to vote against a bill allowing pharmacists to discuss lower-cost drug alternatives with consumers, ending what’s called a “gag clause.”

The bill passed the NC House unanimously 115-0, passed the NC Senate 45-1, and was subsequently signed into law by Governor Cooper, despite Senator Bishop’s lone opposition.

But it’s not just every Member of the NC Senate and the State House who support ending the pharmacist “gag clause,” it’s also President Trump who called the prohibition on pharmacists discussing lower-cost alternatives “unjust,” as well as both of North Carolina’s Republican Senators.

DCCC Spokesperson Cole Leiter released the following statement:

“Senator Bishop needs to explain to North Carolinians why he was the only person, from either party, to stand with drug manufacturers and vote against North Carolinians’ right to know about more affordable drugs. That might be typical for a career politician, but it’s bad for everyday folks, and frankly it just doesn’t make any sense.”
