Spano Gains Primary Challenger Amid Mounting Investigations

Spano’s terrible, horrible, no good, very bad first and only term in Congress just got worse.

Amid investigations by the House Ethics Committee, the DOJ, and the Florida Bar and downright anemic fundraising, Congressman Ross Spano finally drew a primary opponent yesterday when Scott Franklin announced he would challenge Spano for the Republican nomination.

With only $125,000 cash on hand and over $83,000 in debt, even if Spano survives his primary, he’ll be heading into a general election against a strong Democratic candidate with no money left to obscure his record in Congress of voting against lowering prescription drug costs and repeatedly voting in support of a lawsuit that would undermine protections for Floridians living with pre-existing conditions.

“Between his floundering fundraising, mounting debt, multiple investigations, formidable Democratic challengers, and now a primary opponent, embattled Congressman Ross Spano is proof that crime does not, in fact, pay,” said DCCC Spokesperson Sarah Guggenheimer. “Floridians are so tired of having a Congressman more focused on avoiding jail time than delivering results for them that even if Spano wins his primary, voters are more than ready to remove him from office in November.”
