In 2022 midterms, Democrats overperformed nearly every expectation by delivering the best Democratic performance for a first term president since 1962. On Tuesday, Democrats showed that our momentum headed into the 2024 cycle continues to be strong and voters are unimpressed with what the Republican party is offering.
Democrats overperformed in every county in the district compared to the 2022 general election. Overall the district performed 9.3 points better for Democrats than in 2022, going from 65.0% to 74.3%.
Rep.-elect McClellan flipped three rural counties that were carried by the Republican candidate in 2022 by winning 55.3% of the major party vote in Sussex County, 57.1% in Southampton County, and 52.8% in Dinwiddie County.
And Rep.-elect McClellan even made gains in the urban-suburban portions of the district, carrying Chesterfield County with 65.5% of the major party vote (10.8 points higher than 2022) and Richmond City with 90.1% of the vote (6.9 points higher than 2022).
“The party defied the historical pattern and fared well in the 2022 midterm elections in the fall, and there’s nothing in this week’s results to suggest the winds have shifted in Republicans’ direction.”
“With the 2022 general election out of the way, last night almost seemed like a return to form: After the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision in summer 2022, Democrats routinely overperformed President Joe Biden’s margins in a string of congressional elections leading up to November.”
DCCC spokesperson Tommy Garcia:
“Voters are turning out and building enthusiasm for Democrats because they’ve seen the contrast first hand: Democrats will work to protect our freedoms and tackle the actual challenges everyday families face and Republicans are purely dedicated to an extreme ideology and partisan politics that puts their grievances first and families last. Republicans will be on defense in 2024.“
