Last week, a bombshell report from CNN revealed that NRCC-backed MI-03 candidate John Gibbs founded a “think tank” that criticized giving women the right to vote. His outrageous and horrifically sexist remarks drew quick condemnation across Michigan and the country. GOP leadership, however, is remaining notably silent. GOP leader Kevin McCarthy previously said he was backing Gibbs “100%” and would “respect every position that he takes.”
Since his comments came to light, Gibbs is desperately trying to cover up his track record of flagrant misogyny, but “it’s a bad sign when a congressional candidate — in 2022 — feels the need to clarify that he’s not against women’s suffrage.”
West Michigan voters are also well aware that Gibbs has consistently stood against women. He’s gone on the record as “100% pro-life in all cases.” He wants to ban abortion with no exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the mother. He even lauded the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade as “great news for women” – a position far out of step with the vast majority of Michiganders.
John Gibbs is dangerous for West Michigan women and women across the country. The question remains: How long will GOP leadership stand by their sexist candidate?
