“Juneteenth, commemorating when word of freedom finally reached enslaved African Americans in Texas more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, marks an important occasion in our nation’s history. Today we celebrate and honor the generations of African Americans whose struggles have helped our country form a more perfect union while recognizing how far we still have to go.
“Today also stands as an opportunity to recommit ourselves to the fight for full equality. Equality of rights and opportunity are fundamental American principles, and House Democrats are committed to making them a reality for Americans of all races.”
