Ivermectin is in the news again: In the largest trial to date, researchers found the drug didn’t reduce hospital admissions for COVID-19.
That’s no surprise. For over a year, health officials, medical experts, and the drug’s own manufacturer have urged against the use of ivermectin for treating COVID-19, calling it potentially dangerous.
But that didn’t stop vulnerable Republican Rep. Andy Harris from prescribing it to his own patients and complaining that pharmacies didn’t want to fill his prescriptions. And that earned him an investigation into his medical license.
Harris’ promotion of the drug was part of an ecosystem of misinformation that fed Americans dangerous lies and false hope about a drug that was never meant or recommended for treating coronavirus.
In contrast to the GOP’s reliance on quack medical theories, the Biden Administration and Democrats in Congress have focused on science, getting more than 75% of adult Americans fully vaccinated and bringing hospitalizations down by 77%, which means Americans in Maryland and across the country can begin removing their masks and returning to normal.
