Sweeping Barrett-Backed Tariffs Threaten Michigan Manufacturing and Raise Families’ Costs

Every step of the way, Tom Barrett has cheered on Donald Trump’s reckless tariffs. Barrett “defended Trump’s tariffs” and said he is “not ready to give up” on them.

Now, Barrett owes Michiganders an explanation as Michigan manufacturers are sounding the alarms and families’ costs are rising due to his reckless agenda.

What Barrett-backed tariffs mean for Michigan:

  • Barrett-backed tariffs could increase American factory costs by as much as 4.5% and threaten Michigan manufacturing jobs.
  • Barrett-backed tariffs have “significantly increased” HVAC costs for Lansing families by an average of $1,500.
  • Lansing businesses leaders are “worried about where they stand” and their continued operations as “customers are already starting to notice bigger price tags” due to Barrett-backed tariffs.
  • Ford faces a “$2 billion tariff hit” thanks to Barrett-backed tariffs.
  • Barrett-backed tariffs are expected to slash UAW profit-sharing checks by thousands of dollars. Some Stellantis workers are at risk of receiving no bonus for the first time in nearly two decades.
  • And Michigan is one of the hardest-hit states by Barrett-backed tariffs – behind only California and Texas.

DCCC Spokesperson Katie Smith:
“Tom Barrett promised Michiganders he’d get costs down. Instead, Barrett is fully supportive of reckless tariffs that are risking Michigan jobs, raising families’ costs, and threatening Michigan manufacturing. Michiganders deserve better than Tom Barrett.”
