Ted Cruz Blows Up Washington Republican Playbook in TX-23

Cruz launches six-figure TV ad buy for conservative firebrand Raul Reyes, while Hurd, Rubio and the D.C. swamp back Tony Gonzales

Once again, Senator Ted Cruz has decided to blow it all up.

Earlier this afternoon, Cruz threw his weight behind conservative firebrand Raul Reyes – a shock endorsement in the hotly contested GOP runoff for Texas’ 23rd Congressional District.

Cruz’s endorsement of Reyes is a clear shot at the NRCC and establishment politicians like Will Hurd and Marco Rubio, who are all backing swamp-friendly Tony Gonzales.

NRCC Chairman Tom Emmer has repeatedly highlighted Gonzales as a candidate the committee favors and Gonzales is a member of the committee’s Young Guns candidate program, while Reyes has been left off the list.

Another key difference that surely factored into Cruz’s endorsement against the establishment: Gonzales’ Hurd-like political waffling on President Trump’s impeachment, before ultimately deciding he was opposed to it.

“Raul Reyes is an extreme conservative so it’s no surprise that a no-compromise conservative like Ted Cruz is endorsing him,” DCCC Spokesman Avery Jaffe said. “Just like Ted Cruz, Reyes would be a total ally for President Trump’s agenda and that’s why the Washington establishment is trying to stop him.”

Tuesday marked the second day of early voting in the TX-23 Republican runoff. Election Day is in two weeks: July 14.
