During the California Republican State Convention, Ted Cruz was endorsed by former California Governor Pete Wilson – infamous for pushing the harshest anti-immigrant and anti-Latino proposition in California. Proposition 187 denied basic state services to undocumented immigrants and motivated “May Day” protests. Wilson said he supports Cruz because Donald Trump would bring “down-ticket decimation,” an effect he knows all too well since Wilson’s racist and xenophobic rhetoric contributed to the decline of the Republican Party in California since his governorship.
Wilson needs a reality check, because Cruz is just as toxic to the Republican Party as Trump is, and more importantly, Cruz is wrong for California’s Latino families. Like Trump, Cruz supports extreme policies against immigrants and Latinos, like ending birthright citizenship, building a border wall, deporting millions of hardworking immigrant families, and ending President Obama’s immigration actions for DREAMers.
And let’s not forget one of Ted Cruz’s first TV ads, “Invasion,” was just as hateful as Trump calling immigrants “criminals” and “rapists.”
“Dime con quién andas y te diré quien eres, Ted Cruz,” said Javier Gamboa of the DCCC. “Pete Wilson’s endorsement of Ted Cruz serves as an important reminder that Cruz is just as wrong for California Latino families as Donald Trump. Latinos will remember these attacks come election day and will elect candidates up and down the ballot that are willing to fight for them .”
