WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
GoLocalProv: Fung said he opposed codifying the protections of Roe v. Wade into federal law and supports allowing states to ban abortion even in cases of rape, incest, and when a woman’s life is at stake.
WPRI Newsmakers: Fung said he could vote for a nationwide abortion ban – overriding Rhode Island state law.
WPRI Newsmakers: Fung said he would vote for Kevin McCarthy to be GOP Leader.
WPRI Newsmakers: Fung said Republican leadership like Kevin McCarthy was “focused on these same issues that I’ve been trying to talk about from day one.”
The Public’s Radio: Fung said he opposed banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines that have made mass shootings deadlier.
Fung Can’t Be Trusted to Protect Abortion Rights
Don’t believe a word Allan Fung says on abortion, his record shows his anti-abortion policies clearly.
Allan Fung helps lead an organization that celebrated the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe and filed amicus briefs in support of overturning a woman’s right to choose, which they called “egregiously wrong.” While opposing codifying Roe v. Wade into federal law, Fung has also opposed codifying Roe in-state to protect abortion rights in Rhode Island and was previously endorsed by an extreme anti-abortion group.
Pro-choice candidates would protect their constituents’ right to an abortion, full stop. Allan Fung is not pro-choice; he’s against abortion rights.
Fung is Anti-Gun Safety
Allan Fung is an enemy to common sense gun safety.
He got an “A” rating from the NRA and was endorsed by the gun lobby in 2018 and 2014. Fung even opposed a red flag law to keep guns out of the hands of violent individuals and is against an assault weapons ban to keep our communities safe.
Fung Has Aligned Himself With Extreme MAGA Republicans
Allan Fung is headed to Washington in the pocket of extremist Republicans. He even bailed on a local interfaith forum to kiss the ring of House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy in Wyoming. Fung has made clear he supports “a lot of the Republican leadership’s policies and agenda they are putting out.”
Fung has been backed by extremist Republicans in Washington whose agenda would devastate Rhode Island. His first vote would be for Kevin McCarthy to be GOP Leader. McCarthy and Republicans have made clear cutting Social Security and Medicare is one of the first items on their MAGA agenda if given a majority.
Fung, whose MAGA supporters want to ban abortion nationwide, has opposed protecting abortion rights in Rhode Island and said if elected to Congress, he wouldn’t vote to codify Roe into federal law.
Fung’s MAGA Republican backers opposed a bipartisan infrastructure bill to help rebuild the 148 bridges and over 860 miles of highway in poor condition in Rhode Island, which cost Rhode Island drivers $845 per year. In total, these Republicans opposed $2.5 billion to improve Rhode Island roads, bridges, high speed internet access, and clean water access.
Fung would join a MAGA Republican caucus hell-bent on repealing health care protections for millions of Americans – Fung wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act, cutting health care for 67,000 Rhode Islanders and ending protections for pre-existing conditions.
Fung’s Firm Works for Big Pharma, Oil, and Tobacco Companies
Fung, a former lobbyist, now works at a law firm that lobbies on behalf of pharmaceutical, big oil, and tobacco companies. Fung can’t be trusted to fight for Rhode Island when he’s busy doing the bidding of his firm’s clients.
PATH TO VICTORY
Rhode Island’s 2nd congressional district will not be friendly territory for Allan Fung and his MAGA backers this November. Not only has no Republican won this seat since 1988, but during Democrats’ 16-election winning streak, no Republican has come within 15 points. Democrats have carried RI-02 in every federal election since 2008, with President Biden winning the seat by 14 points in 2020 – a 7-point improvement over Hillary Clinton’s margin of victory, as this Democratic seat is only getting further out of reach for Republicans. In 2020, Senator Jack Reed carried the district with an even more commanding 63% of the vote, winning by 27 points. Even in his much-hyped second failed attempt at a run for governor in 2018, Fung lost this district with only 42% of the vote, while he won a mere 40% in 2014. With Allan Fung aligning himself with the types of Republicans whom the voters of Rhode Island have soundly rejected in recent years, he is well-positioned to lose in RI-02 yet again.
