The Case Against Bob Healey Jr.

“Bob Healey Jr. and his multi-million dollar trust fund from his parents have no idea what NJ families need.  He turned his back on women when he said he would work to ban abortion and is trying to push an ultra-MAGA agenda on New Jersey. What makes matters worse is that Healey wants to push policies in Congress that will benefit his family business and the millions he has in stocks where he can rake in millions more in profit. It’s disgusting that Healey wants to go to Congress to make a fortune instead of a difference.”  – DCCC Chairman Sean Patrick Maloney

Subject: The Case Against Bob Healey Jr.

Congressman Andy Kim is a workhorse not a show horse. A public servant who worked under both Democrats and Republicans, he knows how to unite our country to get things done.  Andy Kim listened to the concerns of veterans and then helped secure a new $60M health care clinic for them. Andy listened to the challenges of small businesses and then delivered life-line grants to keep their doors open. He is also championing the fight to ban members of Congress from owning individual stocks and stop insider trading.

At a time when families are struggling to pay bills, Bob Healey Jr. and his mom throw around millions of dollars to buy this seat. Healey supports ending Roe v. Wade and keeping in place the Trump tax law that helped him and his ultra-wealthy friends while raising taxes on New Jerseyans – even declaring “anybody that tells you that trickle down economics doesn’t work has never run a business in their life.” Healey never had to interview for a job in his life or worry about paying rent. He’s wrong for New Jersey.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

Healey Said The Supreme Court “Made The Right Call” In Voting To Overturn Roe v. Wade And That It Was “Unfortunate” That New Jersey Lawmakers Had Codified The Right Of Reproductive Choice Into The State Constitution. HEALEY: “Well first off I think the Supreme Court made the right call here.  It’s a state’s rights issue.  What I and I think a lot of people in this country that a lot of  umbrage with is the fact that this was leaked.  We’ve got to be very, very careful.  The sanctity of our Supreme Court is very important for this country.  If justices feel like they can’t make and come to decisions between themselves without those decisions being leaked, if they feel like they can be pressured externally before their decisions are put in front of this country at the appropriate time, we’re going to have a lot of problems.  It’s going to get very ugly in the judicial branch.  You know as far as the…as far as abortion going forward, it’s now with the state of New Jersey, for our state, and the state of New Jersey has unfortunately enshrined abortion into the constitution.  Certainly, when I get to Congress, I will use the bully pulpit that I will have on the federal side to speak about that issue.  Now it has been remanded to the states which is where I think it should have been back in 1973.” [Facebook, GOP Primary Debate, 5/4/22] (VIDEO) 14:02

Healey Praised The 2017 Tax Cuts And Jobs Act, Which Capped The State And Local Property Tax Deduction.  HEALEY JR.: “2017 the Trump tax cuts, our employees took home more money in their profit share then they ever have had in 57 years of the company’s history.  So anybody that tells you that trickle down economics doesn’t work has never run a business in their life.”  [Lawrence Township GOP, Remarks by Bob Healey, 3/14/22] (VIDEO)

Healey Did Not Respond To Several Requests For Comment About His Stance On The Capitol Insurrection. “Bob Healy, one of Smith’s opponents in the June 7 Republican primary, did not respond to several requests by phone and email for comment about the insurrection. Healey, co-founder of a New Gretna-based yacht company, received a boost recently when the National Republican Congressional Committee added him to its list of potentially competitive GOP challengers.” [NJ Advance, 3/27/22]

Out of touch Bob Healey Jr. and his multi-millionaire family want to buy this Congressional seat and push their MAGA agenda on working-class New Jerseyans.

Healey Is Aligned With MAGA Republicans

Healey Jr. has been backed by extremist Republicans in Washington who would devastate NJ-03. In Washington, Healey would be a rubber stamp to their dangerous MAGA agenda and threaten New Jersey values and increase costs on families.

Healey’s supporters want to repeal health care protections for millions of Americans – at the same time Healey owns stock in over 50 pharma companies, worth up to $1 million.

Healey would join a MAGA Republican caucus that opposed a bipartisan infrastructure bill that would help rebuild New Jersey’s D+ rated infrastructure including 502 bridges and over 3,995 miles of highway in poor condition that cost New Jersey drivers $713 per-year. In total, these Republicans opposed more than $12 billion to improve New Jersey roads, bridges, high speed internet access, and clean water access.

Healey agrees with them on the 2017 Trump tax cuts that capped the SALT deduction while cutting taxes for the wealthy like Healey, saying, “Anybody that tells you that trickle down economics doesn’t work has never run a business in their life.”

Healey agrees with them on punishing private businesses who support LGBTQ rights or any political views they don’t agree with.

Healey’s Anti-Choice Extremism Is A Direct Threat To New Jersey Women

Bob Healey Jr. is a direct threat to reproductive rights and women’s rights to make healthcare decisions about their bodies.

Healey has said the Supreme Court “made the right call” in the draft decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and called it “unfortunate” that New Jersey lawmakers have enshrined and protected abortion rights in New Jersey’s state constitution.

Healey agrees with MAGA Republicans that abortion is not a fundemental right, that Roe should be repealed, and that extremist lawmakers should be able to ban and criminizalize reproductive health care. Healey even said he would use the bully pulpit of Congress to advocate for anti-choice laws in New Jersey.

Healey’s Luxury Yacht Company Ran Afoul of Labor, Worker Safety, and Environmental Laws

Healey and his family have not protected their workers or the environment as operators of their luxury yacht business, violating labor and environment rules repeatedly as they laid off workers.

As Healey argued for more tax cuts for himself and his rich family, his company had laid off hundreds of workers between 2008-2010.

Viking Yachts, which was not unionized, has faced more than two-dozen OSHA investigations  and more than $155,000 in fines involving safety, including an incident that resulted in an employee having their fingers amputated.

From 2018 to 2021, the Viking Yacht Company was listed as “noncompliant” for failing to disclose pollution information to the EPA.

PATH TO VICTORY

Governor Murphy would have won 50.8% of the major-party vote in 2021 in the new NJ-03, making it one of the most closely-divided districts in New Jersey. Still, Rep. Andy Kim has a clear path to winning a third term. In 2020, President Biden would have carried the new version of the district by 14 points with 57.1% of the major-party vote, comparable to Senator Booker’s 56.4%. While the new district trades strongly-Republican Ocean County for Democratic-leaning portions of Mercer and Monmouth Counties, 44% of registered voters are new to NJ-03 and Rep. Kim and will need to be introduced to the electorate. Still, Rep. Kim’s suburban base of support in Burlington County, which gave him 59.8% of the major-party vote in 2018 and 62.8% in 2020, remains in-tact, giving him room to build on past successes. Indeed, Rep. Kim was elected twice in a Trump district, even winning by a convincing 7-point margin with Trump himself at the top of the ticket. Recent elections and the nature of redistricting have made it clear that the new NJ-03 is a competitive district, but Rep. Kim has shown his ability to run a successful campaign against difficult odds.
