The Case Against Brian Maryott

“The residents of Northern San Diego and Southern Orange County have already rejected Brian Maryott – twice. Maryott has proven himself to be nothing but a rubber stamp on the GOP’s toxic, tax-raising agenda. Since the last time Maryott faced off against Congressman Mike Levin, MAGA Republicans have only grown more radical and out of touch with this district. In contrast, Mike Levin is an independent leader who builds bipartisan consensus to deliver for families, seniors and veterans. Maryott’s MAGA talking points will crumble against Mike Levin’s record of results.”  – DCCC Chairman Sean Patrick Maloney

Subject: The Case Against Brian Maryott

After squeaking out a primary win, perennial candidate Brian Maryott will once again struggle to make a compelling case to voters against Congressman Mike Levin’s long list of accomplishments.

Mike Levin is a proven fighter for San Diego and Orange County. Since entering office, he has brought millions of investments home and supported his district’s large veteran community, introducing dozens of bipartisan bills to strengthen benefits and services for veterans in Congress. Protecting and expanding affordable health care is a top priority for Mike Levin, who has led the charge on lowering the costs of prescription drugs and strengthening the Affordable Care Act.

Levin has focused on solving intractable local issues, including cleaning up the radioactive contamination at the decommissioned San Onofre nuclear power plant, shoring up dangerous crumbling seaside bluffs, protecting local estuaries, and stopping raw sewage spills from the Tijuana River from befouling local beaches. In endorsing Levin for re-election the San Diego Union Tribune called Levin’s stellar work “an unusually impressive collection of achievements.”

Meanwhile, Brian Maryott will have to explain to this overwhelming suburban district why he supports raising taxes while attacking affordable health care and a woman’s right to choose. Southern California voters have never given Maryott the chance to represent their voice in Congress – and they won’t change their minds now. That’s because voters know Maryott would be a rubber stamp on MAGA Republicans’ agenda to dismantle the ACA and raise taxes on California homeowners.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

Dredging Today: Representatives Levin, Mast: Mitigating effects of climate change [May 20, 2022]

“U.S. Representatives Mike Levin and Brian Mast have introduced the bipartisan Resilient Coasts and Estuaries Act to strengthen federal efforts to protect estuary habitats like the San Mateo Creek, San Luis Rey River, San Elijo Lagoon, and many others.

“Their bill reauthorizes funding for the Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program at $60 million per year through 2026, which will provide crucial resources to help state and local governments preserve the conservation, recreation, ecological, historical, and aesthetic values of estuaries, and also adds climate change mitigation as one of the program’s goals.”

The San Diego Union Tribune: Endorsement: Our recommendations for House seats in the San Diego area and for the U.S. Senate [May 19, 2022]

“Levin’s success in helping advance solutions for the Tijuana River pollution flooding nightmare, in keeping the spotlight on the need to remove nuclear waste from San Onofre and in advancing veterans causes is an unusually impressive collection of achievements for two initial two terms.”

CBS 8: Push for smaller police departments in San Diego to receive federal funding [April 15, 2022]

“A local US congressman is pushing for more money for smaller police departments.

“’I hear from rank and file officers, they’re expected to do more and more with fewer resources in many cases,” said Congressman Mike Levin (D-Calif). “We have to do all we can to help them be effective and do their jobs well. We expect them to have things like cameras, we have to make sure those systems are funded. We expect them to be trained for de-escalation, we have to make sure the departments have the appropriate funding to train in those areas.’”

The Coastal News Group: Maryott changes ballot designation following Bartlett complaint [March 29, 2022]

“49th Congressional District candidate Brian Maryott has officially changed his ballot designation after a complaint filed by Republican primary challenger Supervisor Lisa Bartlett alleged the former San Juan Capistrano mayor misled voters about his professional employment status.”

“‘The decision by the Secretary of State to force Brian Maryott to change his ballot designation only further confirms what we already knew – Maryott is deliberately misleading voters and pretending to be someone he’s not,’ Bartlett said in a statement.”

The Chicago Tribune: Long shot in crowded 49th primary betting on Trump card [March 22, 2018]

“For obvious reasons, GOP candidates in swing districts keep a wary distance from the president

“Maryott, on the other hand, pumps up Trump without apology.

‘I don’t intend to be bashful about our president,’ Maryott told me.”

VOTERS DON’T WANT BRIAN MARYOTT

Voters have rejected Brian Maryott’s bid for Congress twice already. Even his fellow Republicans have stated their party is doomed with Maryott as the Republican nominee. Maryott is so desperate to redefine himself, he even lied about his occupation on his primary ballot designation; calling himself a ‘Certified Financial Planner’ – an erroneous title that California’s Secretary of State later forced him to correct. Maryott is eager to hide who he is because he knows he is running on a failed record voters will reject for a third time.

TOO EXTREME FOR MODERATE, SUBURBAN CALIFORNIA

Southern Californians continue to reject Brian Maryott because his positions are just too extreme for this district. Throughout his failed Congressional runs, he has promoted dangerous policies that would harm Southern California families. Marryott has fully embraced a MAGA agenda:

In his prior failed campaigns, Brian Maryott threw his support behind GOP plans to increase insurance premiums by nearly 18% in California, which would jeopardize health insurance for 47,000 people in California’s 49th district, impose an age tax on seniors and do nothing to lower the price of prescription drugs.

We know more tax hikes are on the table if Republicans retake majorities in the House and Senate this year. Republicans in Washington have made clear that they plan to raise taxes on millions of Social Security recipients and low-income Americans and sunset programs like Social Security and Medicare, threatening benefits to Southern California seniors that depend on these programs.

In another display of extremism, Maryott is not just coming for Southern Californians’ hard-earned pay – he is a threat to their fundamental rights. In the wake of the Supreme Court’s anticipated overturn of Roe v. Wade, Brian Maryott has affirmed his radical, anti-choice views.

A recent California statewide poll reveals Roe v. Wade is supported by Democrats, independents and Republicans, while experts predict reproductive rights will be a mobilizing factor among California swing voters this November. Mike Levin’s college-educated, suburban district will not take kindly to Maryott’s extreme MAGA stances.

PATH TO VICTORY

During the redistricting process, Rep. Levin’s old district remained 90% intact. In California’s 49th Congressional District, Democrats continue to hold a registration advantage and the district continues to trend away from Republicans. Since 2014 Republicans have lost 7 points in their registration share while Democrats have picked up 7 points. President Biden won this district in 2020 with 56% of the major party vote, a 12-point margin, which was a 3-point improvement from Secretary Clinton’s performance in 2016.

The demographic shifts in Southern California are only one factor bolstering Democrats. The biggest asset in California’s 49th is the Democratic candidate himself. Rep. Mike Levin has proven himself to be an independent leader in Congress; working with both parties to bring back tangible results for his constituents. With his health care slashing, tax-raising agenda, perennial candidate Brian Maryott just doesn’t have a platform that resonates with voters – a fact Maryott twice had the opportunity to learn. This November, the residents of California’s 49th District will reject Maryott’s toxic agenda once again and send Rep. Mike Levin back to Congress.
