The Case Against Carmen Goers

“The voters of Washington’s 8th have already rejected MAGA enablers before, and they’ll do it again this November. Carmen Goers would be a rubber stamp for the GOP’s toxic, far-right agenda – prioritizing the ultra-wealthy and endangering the rights and freedoms of Washington families every step of the way. In contrast, Dr. Kim Schrier is a pragmatic, independent leader and proven problem-solver who builds bipartisan coalitions to deliver for families, farmers, and seniors across our state. Goers and her far-right friends will crumble against Dr. Schrier’s record of results,” said DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene.

Subject: The Case Against Carmen Goers

After emerging from her primary with no money, momentum, or message to communicate in Washington’s 8th, Carmen Goers will have no ability to make a compelling case to voters for her MAGA agenda against Dr. Kim Schrier’s long record of accomplishments and can-do attitude on behalf of her neighbors.

Dr. Schrier is a pediatrician, pro-choice mom, and bipartisan legislator who has dedicated her career to taking care of her community. She’s built a strong record of achievement to match – helping Washington farmers get aheadbolstering local public safety, and protecting veterans’ benefits while finding solutions to fight the fentanyl epidemic and working to secure the Southern border. As one of the only woman doctors in Congress, she’s worked with local officials to secure federal funding for public health and safety, lowered the cost of prescription drugs like insulin, and held big corporations accountable for price gouging on the products and medicines that Washington families rely on most.

Meanwhile, Carmen Goers is a Trump-supporting MAGA Republican who will have to explain why she’s supported by extreme Republicans who want to ban abortion nationwide and override Washington state law to make getting an abortion illegal without exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the woman. Goers will be a rubber stamp for the extreme MAGA agenda in Congress – enabling her party’s worst impulses while leaving families across Washington’s 8th to fend for themselves – and she can’t be trusted to advocate for this district in Congress.

Luckily, voters know they already have a champion in Kim Schrier. Despite so much chaos and dysfunction in the halls of Congress, Dr. Schrier has managed to get dozens of meaningful bills signed into law since taking office and worked across the aisle to get it done. She knows how important it is to be an effective, pragmatic advocate for the people of Washington’s 8th Congressional District, and she’ll continue to deliver on that call to service after being re-elected this November.

GOERS AND HER FAR-RIGHT BACKERS THREATEN REPRODUCTIVE FREEDOM

No matter how she tries to deceive voters, the company that Carmen Goers keeps speaks louder than her words. She’s supported by the same extreme MAGA Republicans who want to ban abortion nationwide, and who’ve made it clear they won’t be satisfied until every state makes abortion care illegal with no exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the woman. If Goers isn’t willing to call out her far-right friends and their anti-abortion beliefs now, she certainly won’t do it when it matters most.

Meanwhile, both as a physician and a legislator, Dr. Schrier has always stood up for a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions, free from interference by overreaching politicians. Her commitment to preserving reproductive freedom has never wavered, and she won’t stop fighting until Roe v. Wade is codified into law.

GOERS’ AGENDA WOULD JEOPARDIZE HEALTH CARE AND SENIORS’ BENEFITS

Goers’ endorsements also tell us how she’d endanger the health care access and seniors’ benefits that Washingtonians rely on most. She will side with her party even when the consequences are disastrous for her constituents’ livelihoods, including cutting Social Security benefits for seniors and Medicare and Medicaid programs that keep so many families of all backgrounds safe across the state.

Keeping this community safe and healthy is in Dr. Schrier’s DNA. As a doctor, a mom, and a type 1 diabetic herself, she’s done everything in her power to protect health care access for Washingtonians while in Congress, even helping pass legislation to lower the costs of life-saving medication like insulin, and she’ll continue focusing on this issue until every Washington family has the quality, affordable, and accessible health care they deserve.

GOERS WOULD COST WASHINGTON FAMILIES IN CONGRESS

As Washington families struggle with costs, Carmen Goers would stand with her far-right campaign donors and block nearly every effort to help ease the burden on working Washingtonians. In Congress, she’d follow their lead and refuse to cap the price of prescription drugs, or lower gas and grocery costs.

By contrast, Kim has spent her tenure in Congress fighting to make life more affordable for every Washington resident. She’s helping take on the corporate price gougers who are merging for profit and raising costs on consumers, and she is working to ease the burden on Washington farmers trying to get their products to market. Every step of the way, she has put her neighbors’ bottom line first – and she’ll never stop.

With Goers and her far-right friends hellbent on banning reproductive freedoms, making life less affordable, and restricting health care access for Washington families, she doesn’t have a platform to stand on that would ever resonate with voters in this district.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

Seattle Times: Here’s who The Times editorial board recommends for the 8th Congressional District. [Seattle Times, 6/23/24]

“She had 14 bills signed into law by Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden on topics ranging from water supply in the Yakima Basin to specialty crop research funding to support for children’s mental health care. Schrier opposes the proposed grocery chain merger between Albertsons and Kroger, a move she said would be “devastating for our orchardists” by reducing competition. On affordability — a top issue in the district, she said — Congress ought to do more to reduce housing costs through tax credits and other incentives. Earlier this year, Schrier announced that she had secured federal funding for a 12-unit residential building dedicated to low-income older veterans in Ellensburg, and for renovations of 16 affordable units in Enumclaw.”

PATH TO VICTORY

Dr. Schrier has won three straight races – emerging victorious by at least a 5-point margin in each campaign she’s run – despite Republicans targeting her in past cycles with millions of dollars in negative attacks.

Those victories are in no small part thanks to her campaign operation, regarded as one of the strongest on the House battlefield, and her ability to consistently outraise opponents with the strength of her small-dollar donors. Dr. Schrier heads into November with a massive war chest – having raised over $1 million in the second quarter of 2024 alone and holding an impressive $3.3 million cash-on-hand.

Above all, the biggest asset in Washington’s 8th District is the Democratic candidate herself. Dr. Kim Schrier has proven herself to be a pragmatic, independent leader in Congress – working with both parties to bring home tangible results for her constituents, and always putting her neighbors first in Congress.

With an unparalleled record of achievement and all the necessary resources to communicate that message back home, voters in Washington’s 8th will send Dr. Schrier back to Congress to continue her service this November.
