The Case Against George Logan

“Jahana Hayes is a tireless advocate for Connecticut families. From protecting women’s reproductive freedom, lowering costs of prescription drugs, standing up for veterans, or working to end hunger and expand access to nutritional food, Congresswoman Hayes’ impressive record in Congress proves her steadfast commitment to delivering time and again for her district. Just like they did in 2022, Connecticut voters will reject George Logan’s close ties to MAGA leadership and his efforts to prop up their dangerous agenda to rip away women’s rights, slash Social Security and Medicare, and hurt working families. Connecticut’s Fifth District can’t afford Logan’s extremism,” said DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene.

Subject: The Case Against George Logan

Families of Connecticut’s Fifth District have rejected George Logan once before, and this November, they will once again make the choice between Jahana Hayes – a celebrated and award-winning teacher who has delivered for them time and time again – and MAGA-aligned corporate lobbyist Logan.

Born and raised in Connecticut, Jahana Hayes is beloved by her community. After experiencing poverty, homelessness, and teenage motherhood, Jahana went back to school and became a high school teacher – later being named National Teacher of the Year. Teaching instilled in her the belief that everyone has potential and deserves to be a part of the conversation about economic opportunity and prosperity, which is exactly what led her to run to represent Connecticut families in Congress.

Over the past six years as the representative of Connecticut’s Fifth District, Jahana has repeatedly delivered for her constituents. She’s secured millions for schools, law enforcement, and infrastructure improvements throughout the district while remaining focused on lowering costs and making life better for Connecticut families – from fighting to end hunger, standing up for our veterans, lowering the cost of prescription drugs, working to increase access to baby formula, and protecting abortion rights.

George Logan, on the other hand, boasts a record that proves he supports policies and positions that would directly hurt Connecticut’s Fifth District. In the State Senate, he voted to restrict women’s reproductive rights, against lowering costs for working families, and against common-sense gun safety measures. A former corporate lobbyist, Logan also voted in the interests of the utility company that signed his paychecks, which pushed to raise utility rates for Connecticut families.

Now, in his run for Congress, Logan has doubled down on this extremism by fully embracing the most dangerous members of the Republican Party with open arms – including Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and, of course, convicted felon Donald Trump. Connecticut families will reject Logan once again this November.

LOGAN IS A MAGA REPUBLICAN

Since the moment he launched his campaign, George Logan has worked overtime to align himself with the MAGA wing of the Republican Party – despite running to represent a congressional district that then-President Donald Trump lost by roughly eleven points in 2020.

First, Logan pledged fealty to MAGA extremism by calling far-right, anti-choice, election-denying members of GOP House leadership, including Mike Johnson, Elise Stefanik, Steve Scalise, and Tom Emmer, “incredible leaders.” Then, he continued to double-down on his steadfast commitment to the MAGA movement by bringing Mike Johnson to campaign with him in Hartford – further aligning himself with the extremist Speaker’s dangerous record and agenda to restrict abortion, jeopardize critical programs for seniors, and attack basic freedoms.

Finally, after consistently dodging any questions about loyalty to Trump for months – even going so far as claiming “no one on the campaign trail has asked” him despite reporters repeatedly posing the question over and over again for months – Logan recently wholeheartedly endorsed convicted felon Donald Trump and exposed his true alignment to the most dangerous, far-right member of the Republican Party.

George Logan’s blind loyalty is proof he’s only interested in doing the bidding of Donald Trump and Republican Party bosses instead of fighting for Connecticut families.

LOGAN IS AN ANTI-CHOICE EXTREMIST

George Logan has repeatedly indicated that he sides with far-right proponents of a nationwide abortion ban that would override Connecticut law, restricting the right to choose for Connecticut women. By campaigning alongside Mike Johnson in Hartford, Logan aligned with the extreme Speaker’s dangerous record of pushing for a national abortion ban with no exceptions for rape, incest, or to save a woman’s life that would also prohibit IVF and common forms of birth control. Logan also co-signed Johnson’s record of advocating for ten years of hard labor for doctors for providing abortion care. And by endorsing convicted felon Donald Trump, Logan publicly signaled his support of the Republican Party leader who bragged about being responsible for the disastrous overturning of Roe v. Wade, and supports a nationwide abortion ban.

On top of the anti-choice company Logan chooses to keep with Trump and Johnson, his record is riddled with his own support for restricting Connecticut women’s abortion rights. On the campaign trail in 2022, Logan refused to support Roe v. Wade and codifying its protections nationwide, instead letting politicians institute draconian abortion bans. He’s also contributed thousands of dollars to anti-choice politicians, including multiple cosponsors of a nationwide abortion ban without exceptions for rape, incest, or to save a woman’s life.

Meanwhile, Jahana Hayes has been a fierce advocate for protecting Connecticut women’s reproductive rights. In Congress, Jahana has consistently fought against legislation attempting to limit access to abortion and other contraceptive care, and voted to pass legislation which would codify the right to choose into law. A member of the Pro-Choice Caucus, she has also championed access to IVF. Connecticut women can only trust one candidate in this race to protect their rights, and that’s Jahana Hayes.

LOGAN IS A THREAT TO THE MIDDLE CLASS

George Logan may be a smooth talker on the campaign trail when it comes to spouting rhetoric on lowering costs, but even just a glance at his record makes it plain as day that he’s a threat to Connecticut’s middle class.

As a State Senator, Logan took vote after vote to hurt Connecticut families. For instance, Logan voted to block Connecticut’s paid family and medical leave law which, as of January 2024, has benefitted more than 93,000 people across the state. He also voted against raising Connecticut’s minimum wage to $15, which has benefited 510,000 workers. Lastly, Logan has an egregious record when it comes to criticizing unions, saying they have an “unhealthy grip” on the Connecticut State Legislature – he even called one union a “powerful special interest group” and implied union workers’ benefits should be cut.

And if there wasn’t enough evidence already proving Logan’s record of hurting the middle class, for over 30 years he held senior positions – including as a lobbyist – for Aquarion Water Company, a public utility company that worked to hike utility rates for working families. In 2022, Aquarion proposed a 27% increase in water rates that would have cost Connecticut families an extra $75 a year alone. Logan defended the proposal, but it was denied after state regulators found that the company was trying to pass off its lobbying costs to ratepayers – benefitting people in Logan’s old job.

In contrast, Jahana Hayes knows firsthand that Connecticut’s working families, unions, and small businesses are the backbone of our communities. In Congress, she’s supported critical legislation like the Raise the Wage ActProtecting the Right to Organize ActPaycheck Fairness Act, and the American Rescue Plan – which provided nearly $25 billion dollars in funding to make childcare more accessible. Connecticut families have a champion in Jahana Hayes – not George Logan.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

CT Insider: Jahana Hayes bashes opponent over candid Trump remarks: ‘He’s trying to pull one over on the voters’ [CT Insider, 6/26/24]

“Donald Trump is the topic that George Logan has long sought to avoid mentioning as he makes his case to voters in Connecticut’s most closely-watched congressional race.

“Now the Republican — who is running to unseat U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes in the state’s 5th Congressional District — is facing heat for candid comments he made about the former president while speaking to a group of fellow Republicans, and at least one reporter, during a campaign event last week.

“According to a story published Friday by the Waterbury Republican-American, Logan asked supporters at a rally in Kent to turn off their cell phones and cameras before ‘loudly’ announcing to the audience that he had twice voted for Trump and planned to do so again in November.”

CT Mirror: Will RNC reopen Black, Latino community center in CT? It’s unclear [CT Mirror, 3/20/24]

“In 2022, the Republican National Committee worked to get more engaged with voters of color in communities where the GOP has historically underperformed…

“But shortly after the end of the midterm elections season, the RNC wound down many of the centers, with only a handful remaining open. The RNC’s Black & Hispanic Community Center in New Britain shut down at the end of 2022, apparently one of the casualties.

“Located in the state’s most competitive congressional district, the center served as both a political office and community event space… Now, though, state GOP officials would like to see a new one — this time in a different part of Connecticut’s 5th District.

“But it is unclear how that plan will be executed ahead of November and how much outreach to voters of color remains a priority heading into the elections. The RNC did not respond to a request for comment about whether it will revive the Connecticut office.”

PATH TO VICTORY

Connecticut families have elected Jahana Hayes three times in a row because of her strong record of delivering on the things that matter most to her constituents and her deep ties to the district – which includes her hometown of Waterbury, the largest town in the district.

Meanwhile, George Logan has already been rejected once before because his alignment with the MAGA movement is deeply out-of-touch with this majority-suburban district that spans communities from the New York commuter area to Hartford.

Republicans have tried and failed to win a single congressional seat in Connecticut since 2006, and this year is no different. In 2020, despite President Biden winning Connecticut’s Fifth District by 10.7 points, Jahana still out-performed the top of the ticket handily. In 2024, Democrats have a nearly 9-point Democratic registration advantage in Connecticut’s Fifth District – ensuring that Jahana Hayes is well-positioned once again to win re-election, just like she has for the past three election cycles.
