The Case For Jennifer Wexton

“Virginians know they can always count on Jennifer Wexton to show up and deliver for them, day in and day out. As a Loudoun County prosecutor, advocate for children, state senator, and now member of Congress, Jennifer has never backed down from a tough fight. Northern Virginia is Jennifer Wexton country – Virginians will reject Hung Cao’s toxic politics and re-elect her this November.” – DCCC Chairman Sean Patrick Maloney

Subject: The Case For Jennifer Wexton

Virginians elected Jennifer Wexton to Congress in 2018 because of her deep roots in the district and her strong record of service to her community. She has a passion for protecting others and dedicated her life to serving families in Northern Virginia – first as a prosecutor, an advocate for abused children, and state senator, and now as a member of Congress representing VA-10. Virginians know they can always count on her to fight for them in DC – and this November, voters will send her back to Congress to continue being a voice for working families.

Hailing from Loudoun County, where she served as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney and prosecuted criminal cases for many years, Jennifer Wexton understands the values of Northern Virginia and she has a strong record of results. As a state senator, Wexton was a leader in the bipartisan fight to expand Medicaid to nearly 600,000 Virginia families. She also worked with both parties on the local issues that matter: supporting and attracting small businesses across the state, investing in education and workforce training, combating the heroin and opioid epidemic, and tackling traffic congestion.

In Congress, Jennifer Wexton has continued delivering for working families, delivering pandemic relief to small businesses and families and passing a major infrastructure investment for Virginia.

All of that is on the line this November, because Hung Cao would work relentlessly to undo that progress and serve as a rubber stamp for the extreme MAGA agenda in DC.

The clown car Republican primary in VA-10 made one thing clear: The Virginia GOP is in complete disarray. As the eleven – yes, eleven – candidates all jockeyed to position themselves as the most extreme, far-right option in the race, they continued to disqualify themselves as an option to Virginia voters in the general election. With no top-tier recruit to choose from, Republicans never settled on a consensus candidate, letting their nearly dozen candidates duke it out in the Wild West of the Saturday firehouse primary. One could practically hear the circus music.

Now, Virginia Republicans have decided on their sacrificial lamb to run and lose in VA-10 – and the more voters get to know Hung Cao, the less they’ll like.

Hung Cao quickly sprinted to the far right to try and make it out of this chaotic primary, and in doing so, proved just how out of step he is with Northern Virginians. He’s aligned himself with some of the swampiest personalities in Washington, embracing the endorsement of Rep. Ronny Jackson, who was under review by Pentagon officials for engaging in “inappropriate conduct” while serving as the top White House physician, including alleged abusive behavior toward subordinates, sexual harassment, and freely distributing prescription drugs to White House staff. Cao is also backed by Ryan Zinke, Trump’s former Secretary of the Interior who “misused his position and lied to investigators […], repeatedly breaking federal ethics rules.”

Cao is also extreme and toxic on the issues that matter. In the wake of alarming reports that the Supreme Court of the United States is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, Cao said he was “thrilled,” turning his back on Virginia women who deserve the right to make decisions about their own bodies and futures. He’s made opposing reproductive rights a core issue of his candidacy, musing, “How is it that bacteria on Mars is considered life, but a viable fetus is not?”

The last thing Virginians need is another extremist rubber stamp for the MAGA Republicans that stand on the wrong side of the issues that matter, like infrastructure investments, good-paying jobs, COVID-19 relief for small businesses and families, and capping the price of prescription drugs. Voters will re-elect Jennifer Wexton this November.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING:

“‘At the end of the day, it’s probably going to be a hard flip,’ said J. Miles Coleman, an associate editor of Sabato’s Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia. ‘We have it as safe Democratic. Our thinking was that if it didn’t flip [in the 2021 gubernatorial race], it’s probably not going to flip in 2022.’” [Washington Post, 05/18/22]

“Wexton’s 10th District changed the least geographically and demographically of the three with nearly three-fourths of her old Democratic-leaning district in her redrawn boundaries, all of it in the D.C. suburbs.” [Washington Post, 05/16/22]

PATH TO VICTORY

Rep. Jennifer Wexton’s path to victory in Virginia’s 10th Congressional District is clear. The new VA-10 is anchored in Loudoun County and includes parts of Prince William and Fairfax Counties, as well as Fauquier and Rappahannock Counties in its southern portion.

This new configuration is a well-educated, heavily suburban district that has been trending Democratic. President Joe Biden and Sen. Mark Warner both won this district in 2020, and Sen. Tim Kaine won as well as in 2018. Under the new lines, Biden would have received 59.2%, and Terry McAuliffe would have received 51.1%.

Voters in VA-10 have consistently supported Democratic candidates up and down the ballot, and Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton is the perfect representative for this seat. Virginians will proudly re-elect her in November.
