After dodging numerous questions from reporters last week and throughout his campaign, Tom Kean Jr. finally got the hammer from the largest editorial board in New Jersey.

Tom Kean Jr. is running for Congress – again — and he apparently believes that he can still dodge questions, remain silent, run on his surname, and avoid the choice that elected officials from the Republican party must make between upholding democracy or sanctioning “discourse” that involves mob violence and death.
For a week, Kean has repeatedly been asked for his response to the Republican National Committee’s pronouncement that the Jan. 6 riot represented “legitimate political discourse,” and he has refused to return a call or summon the political courage to untie his tongue.
It isn’t a difficult choice, but the candidate for Congress from New Jersey’s 7th District still seems to fear the wrath of the MAGA crowd if he picks wrong:
Does he stand with the people of Warren, Hunterdon, Somerset, and Union Counties, who presumably want to choose their own leaders without an explosion of banana republic violence?
Or does he stand with rioters who concuss cops?
There can no longer be any middle ground, and those who refuse to abandon their integrity know this. Republicans such as Leonard Lance, Rodney Frelinghuysen, and Gov. Christie Whitman have had enough, signing on to a letter condemning the RNC resolution as “an affront to the rule of law, peaceful self-government, and the constitutional order.”
Their party’s leadership – minus Mitch McConnell and some others — is relying on American voters having short memories and the chance to wave it away on the hopes that their embrace of a sociopath will lead to electoral triumph.
Kean, feckless as ever, apparently has made his choice. And those who choose to remain silent will forever be remembered for an extreme form of political hackery that hopes to sink democracy.
