The Republican Government Shutdown Makes History: Longest Shutdown Ever

As a reminder, the longest shutdowns in American history have both been led by Trump and his failed Republican leadership.

A brief timeline of what the American people are facing thanks to House Republicans:

• Oct. 1: The federal government is shut down after Republicans refused to protect health care and extend ACA tax credits.
• Oct. 10: The Trump administration laid off more than 4,000 federal employees from seven key departments including the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Education.
• Oct. 14: The shutdown enters week two as House Speaker Mike Johnson says, “We’re barreling toward one of the longest shutdowns in American history.”
• Oct. 24: Federal workers miss their first paycheck meaning “about 1.4 million civilian federal employees are going without pay” severely impacting hardworking families’ ability to put food on the table.
• Nov. 1: SNAP funds run dry as the shutdown enters its second month, leaving about 42 millions of Americans without enough food. The health care open enrollment period begins with some Americans seeing their premiums increase by over 300%.
• Nov. 4: Trump threatens to defy a federal court order that would continue SNAP funding.

• Today: No end in sight for Republican vacation and for the federal government to resume operations.
