The Ripple Effect Of the Iran War On Struggling U.S. Farmers [CBS News]

“It will have significant ramifications for both those who produce our food, and for those who eat it” – Ag Policy Expert

U.S. farmers are being hit by the war in Iran at a time when the agriculture industry is already facing a Republican-driven crisis. The war has caused diesel and fertilizer prices to skyrocket with an essential fertilizer ingredient up around 50% and diesel up over 43%. U.S. farmers are still overcoming losses from last year, and the American Farm Bureau Federation reports U.S. farm bankruptcies saw a 46% increase from 2024 to 2025.

As many farmers move into planting season, they are once again being left with more problems and no solutions:

“It just feels like the world is trying to take this all away from us right now.” – lifelong farmer Lance Lillibridge of Vinton, Iowa.

”It really impacts the cost of every step of the process, all the way from seed, all the way through to finished product, which affects the price when it gets to your grocery store.” – Scott Marlow, former deputy administrator of farm programs at the USDA Farm Service Agency.

DCCC Spokesperson Bridget Gonzalez:
“Republicans are hitting farmers from all angles — they’re tearing down the generational farms that feed the country and screwing people at the checkout aisle. Our farmers and our country deserve better.”
