| Vulnerable Republican Mike Lawler loves to talk tough on the Chinese Communist Party. But when a convicted illegal agent of that same “foe” needed a Get Out of Jail Free card, Lawler was first in line to hand it to him.
A recent City & State report confirms Lawler was a top advocate for the presidential pardon of Michael McMahon, a former NYPD sergeant “convicted and sentenced last year to 18 months in prison for stalking a Chinese dissident and acting as an illegal foreign agent for the Chinese government.”

A federal judge deemed McMahon a threat to national security. But that didn’t stop Lawler from writing a letter to the court urging he be spared prison time. Then Lawler took a victory lap when Donald Trump granted the pardon, tweeting that he had been “strongly advocating on his behalf.”
After Trump wiped McMahon’s record clean, Lawler personally hosted him and his wife for a private Capitol tour. McMahon’s wife had already attended a June 2024 fundraiser for Lawler headlined by Speaker Mike Johnson, and credits Lawler with singlehandedly getting her husband out of prison.
DCCC Spokesperson Riya Vashi:
“Mike Lawler looks out for everyone except the people he was elected to represent. He talks tough on China, then personally advocates for a convicted CCP agent. Hudson Valley families deserve a real leader whose actions actually match their words.”
