The World Republicans Made: Doctors Criminalized, Women Left to Die, Children Forced to Give Birth

Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe, Republicans are now seeking to attack and prosecute doctors who assist a woman in obtaining reproductive health care.

  • As part of House Republicans’ most recent effort to legislate a nationwide abortion ban beyond 5-6 weeks – before many women know they’re pregnant – a physician who performs an abortion would face imprisonment. Among the draconian bill’s 121 cosponsors: NRCC Chair Tom Emmer, Steve Chabot (OH-01), Don Bacon (NE-02), and Yvette Herrell (NM-02).

  • The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology will hold a virtual certification exam, following SCOTUS’ decision to overturn Roe, due in part to the increased safety risk. States are seeking to prosecute OB-GYNs and doctors who assist in any type of abortion and abortion providers face increased threats of violence.

  • In Texas, several hospitals are reportedly preventing doctors from treating patients with serious pregnancy complications for fear of violating the state’s extreme abortion ban, and the attorney general is now suing the Biden administration over its directive that doctors must provide an abortion if it’s needed to save a woman’s life. The Texas AG is suing to ensure women die.

  • Yesterday, National Right to Life general counsel James Bopp revealed his group’s plan to push legislation in states across the country that would have forced a 10-year-old rape victim in Ohio to carry and deliver her rapist’s child.

  • And Indiana’s Attorney General is reportedly investigating the doctor who provided care to the 10-year-old rape victim.

DCCC spokesperson Helen Kalla:
“House Republicans’ efforts to ban abortion nationwide and throw doctors in jail for saving women’s lives sends a clear warning to voters nationwide: Republicans pose one of the greatest threats to our freedoms and will not stop until they ban abortion completely nationwide.”
