The World Republicans Made: More States Enact Total Abortion Bans

Yesterday, Texas, Tennessee and Idaho’s near-total abortion bans went into effect. These three new states bring the total number of states banning nearly all abortions to 15Six states have trigger laws that have been blocked and Indiana is expected to ban abortion imminently. At least one in three women have already lost abortion access in America.

This is what Republicans mean when they try to hide their support for a nationwide abortion ban by saying the issue “should be returned to the states.” They want to allow state legislatures to ban abortion entirely, even in cases of rape and incest and when the mother’s life is at risk. And these same politicians have signaled support for a national ban that would eliminate protections for abortion rights in the remaining states.

“Week after week, we see the devastating and dangerous consequences of Republicans’ war against freedom and reproductive rights,” said DCCC spokesperson Helen Kalla. “One third of women have already lost their right to abortion in their state – if Republicans have their way, no woman is safe from the government overreach Republicans want.”
