The World Republicans Made: Women Face Death or Six-Hour Ambulance Rides As Doctors Banned from Providing Lifesaving Care

It has been over 100 days since the Republican Supreme Court overturned Roe, and women are being forced into extremely dangerous situations in the new world Republicans made. Unconcerned by the fallout from their extreme anti-abortion agenda, Republicans are doubling down and calling for a nationwide ban on abortion.

Here are some of the latest tragic consequences of Republicans’ war on women:

  • “We asked all of our doctors and our nurses, isn’t there something you can do, and they said no,” Amanda says in the video. “I couldn’t make the decision for myself, we couldn’t make the decision for our daughter, our doctors couldn’t make the decision. They were just as furious as we were because their hands were tired. Had they acted, they would have been charged with a felony.”

  • An aide for her state senator, a Republican named Bill White, told her the state ban that was literally jeopardizing her life was actually “designed to protect the woman’s life.” Farmer recalled telling White’s aide, “It’s not protecting me.… There’s no chance for a baby; she’s not going to make it. It’s putting my life in danger.” She continued, “I’m 41, it’s not something I can recover from quickly. I could lose my uterus, there’s a lot of things that could happen. We just want to move on, we just want to grieve.” White promised he’d talk to the state’s Attorney General Eric Schmitt on her behalf and then connected Farmer with an anti-abortion crisis pregnancy center in the state. Farmer never heard from him again.

WSJ: Doctors Struggle With Navigating Abortion Bans in Medical Emergencies

  • Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June, ending constitutional protections for abortion, laws banning many or most abortions have taken effect in over a dozen states. All of these laws make some sort of allowance for doctors to end a pregnancy to save the life of the mother, a core tenet of the mainstream antiabortion movement. But some doctors say that in practice these exemptions are so narrow and the penalties for making the wrong decision so harsh that they have to choose between putting patient lives at risk or putting themselves in legal jeopardy.

DCCC spokesperson Helen Kalla:
“Washington Republicans want to make these horrific tragedies a reality for women and doctors nationwide. Voters will reject Republicans’ callous attacks on our freedom in just a few weeks.”
